Getting Started
How to Download & Install TAWK
Step-by-step installation for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs

1. Download

After purchasing, you'll be redirected to the download page. Choose the right version for your Mac:

  • Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4) — most Macs from 2020 onward
  • Intel — older Macs (pre-2020)
Not sure which Mac you have? Click the Apple menu () → About This Mac. It will say "Apple M1/M2/M3/M4" or "Intel".

2. Install

  1. Open the downloaded .dmg file
  2. Drag TAWK.app into your Applications folder
  3. Double-click TAWK in Applications to launch

3. macOS Security Prompt

If macOS says TAWK "can't be opened," go to System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down, and click "Open Anyway". This is normal for apps downloaded outside the App Store.

4. Grant Permissions

TAWK needs two permissions to work:

  • Microphone — to hear your voice (macOS will prompt you automatically)
  • Accessibility — to type text at your cursor (see next article)
First launch takes ~30 seconds while the AI model loads into memory. After that, TAWK starts instantly.
Setting Up Accessibility Permission
Required for TAWK to type at your cursor

TAWK needs Accessibility access to simulate keyboard input and type text wherever your cursor is. Without it, TAWK can record and transcribe but can't paste the result.

How to Enable

  1. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility
  2. If TAWK is in the list, make sure the toggle is ON
  3. If TAWK is not in the list, click +, navigate to Applications, select TAWK, and add it
  4. Enter your Mac password when prompted
After a macOS update, you may need to re-grant this permission. If TAWK says "Permission Needed" after updating macOS, follow the troubleshooting steps below.
How to Use TAWK
Recording, transcribing, and changing your hotkey

Basic Usage

  1. Click where you want to type (any app, any text field)
  2. Press Option + R to start recording
  3. Speak naturally at normal speed
  4. Press Option + R again to stop

TAWK transcribes your speech and types it at your cursor. That's it.

Changing Your Hotkey

Click the TAWK icon in the menu bar → Hotkey. Choose from:

  • Option + R (default)
  • Option + T
  • Option + Space
  • Control + R
  • Control + T

Your choice is saved automatically.

Menu Bar

TAWK lives in your menu bar at the top of the screen. A red dot appears next to the icon when recording is active.

Troubleshooting
Hotkey Not Working
When pressing your hotkey does nothing

Quick Fix

Click TAWK in the menu bar → Check Permissions. TAWK will diagnose the issue and tell you exactly what's wrong.

Common Causes

  • Accessibility permission missing — go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility and make sure TAWK is toggled ON
  • Another app using the same hotkey — try changing TAWK's hotkey via the menu bar
  • TAWK isn't running — check for the TAWK icon in the menu bar. If it's not there, open TAWK from Applications
"Permission Needed" After Restart
Accessibility permission lost after macOS update or restart

This is a macOS security feature, not a TAWK bug. macOS occasionally resets Accessibility permissions after updates.

How to Fix

  1. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility
  2. Find TAWK in the list and click to remove it
  3. Click + to re-add TAWK from Applications
  4. Make sure the toggle is ON
  5. Quit TAWK completely (menu bar → Quit) and reopen it
This typically only happens after major macOS updates, not regular restarts.
TAWK Not Typing / Text Not Appearing
Recording works but text doesn't appear at your cursor

Check These

  1. Is your cursor in a text field? — Click into a text input before pressing the hotkey
  2. Is Accessibility enabled? — System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility → TAWK must be ON
  3. Try a different app — test in TextEdit or Notes to rule out app-specific issues
TAWK uses a clipboard-paste fallback if direct typing fails. If you see text in your clipboard but not at your cursor, the Accessibility permission is likely the issue.
Audio / Microphone Issues
TAWK can't hear you or transcription is blank

Check Microphone Permission

Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and make sure TAWK is toggled ON.

Check Your Input Device

Go to System Settings → Sound → Input and make sure the correct microphone is selected. Try speaking and check if the input level moves.

Bluetooth Headset Issues

If you're using Bluetooth headphones/AirPods, the microphone sometimes disconnects during sleep/wake. Try:

  • Disconnecting and reconnecting your Bluetooth device
  • Quitting and reopening TAWK (it will reconnect to the audio device)
Viewing Logs for Debugging
How to find TAWK's log file if support asks for it

TAWK keeps a log file at ~/.tawk/tawk.log.

How to Access

  • Click TAWK in the menu bar → View Logs
  • Or open Finder, press Cmd + Shift + G, type ~/.tawk/, and open tawk.log

If support asks for your logs, attach this file to your email.
