If you speak more than one language, you know the routine with most dictation tools. Open settings. Find the language list. Switch from English to Spanish. Dictate. Switch back. Forget to switch back, and your next English email comes out as a string of strange Spanish words.
This guide covers how multilingual dictation works on a Mac, what Apple Dictation asks of you, how TAWK detects more than 90 languages on its own with no internet, and practical tips for bilingual speakers, strong accents and anyone who writes in more than one language in the same day.
How Apple Dictation Handles Languages
Apple Dictation supports a long list of languages, but it needs to know which one you are about to speak. You choose it in System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation. You can add several languages there, and when you have more than one, you can switch between them from the dictation window while you work.
That works well if you switch rarely. If you write to your team in English, your family in Arabic and a client in French within the same hour, the switching becomes the slow part, and forgetting to switch gives you text in the wrong language.
Offline support also varies. On Macs with Apple silicon, many languages are processed on the device. Others still send audio to Apple and need an internet connection. For a closer look at how the two engines compare, see Whisper vs Apple Dictation.
How TAWK Detects Your Language Automatically
TAWK is a menu bar app that types your words at your cursor in any app. It uses OpenAI's Whisper, a speech model trained on 680,000 hours of audio in many languages. Instead of asking you to choose a language, TAWK works out which language you are speaking and writes in it.
Speak English and you get English. Start the next dictation in Portuguese and you get Portuguese. There is no menu to open first and nothing to remember to switch back.
- 90+ languages, detected automatically. Every dictation, every app.
- Fully offline. The speech model ships inside the app with all its languages, so there are no language packs to download. Your voice and your words never leave your Mac. Transcription runs on your Mac with no internet.
- Short sentences too. Short phrases are the hardest to detect, because there is so little to go on. Since version 1.4.14, TAWK handles short sentences in another language as well.
- Same key everywhere. Hold, speak, release, in Slack, Gmail, WhatsApp on the web, Notion, Word or any text box.
Supported languages include English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Greek, Turkish, Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, Urdu, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Indonesian, Malay, Vietnamese, Thai and Tagalog, along with many more.
Whisper is strongest in languages with lots of training audio behind them, such as English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese and Japanese. Languages with less audio still work, but expect a few more corrections. The best way to know is to try your own languages with the free words before you buy.

Who Gets the Most From Automatic Detection
- Families split across countries. Messages home in one language, work email in another, with no settings in between.
- Teams that work across regions. Support, sales and operations people who answer customers in their own languages all day.
- Language learners. Speaking a paragraph in the language you are learning and reading back what came out is a quick, honest check on your pronunciation.
- Writers and translators. Draft in the language you think in, then edit or translate on the page.
Tips for Bilingual and Multilingual Speakers
Keep each dictation in one language
Switching languages in the middle of a sentence is the hardest case for any speech model, TAWK included. When you mix, it may write the whole sentence in one language, or spell a borrowed word the way the main language would. We would rather tell you that now than have you find out mid email. For the cleanest text, keep each dictation in one language. If you need a full phrase in the other language, stop and start a new dictation for it.
Switch between dictations, not inside them
Because TAWK works out the language each time you dictate, switching between dictations costs you nothing. Reply to one Slack thread in English, the next in Hindi, then a client in German, with no settings in between. Our guide to voice typing in Slack shows how fast that flow gets.
Start with a full sentence
Detection works best when it has real words to listen to. If your dictation begins with a name, a brand or a tech term that sounds the same in both languages, start with a short normal sentence instead, then bring in the name.
Check names and borrowed words
Product names, people's names and English terms inside another language can come out spelled the way the main language would spell them. Give them a quick look before you hit send.
Dictating With an Accent
Accents are where older dictation tools struggled most. Whisper was trained on a very wide range of speakers and recordings, which is one reason it tends to cope better with accented speech than older systems. A few habits still make a real difference:
- Speak at your normal pace. Slowing down too much breaks the natural rhythm the model expects.
- Do not exaggerate your pronunciation. Your normal voice is what works best.
- Use a close microphone. AirPods or a headset give the model a cleaner signal than a laptop mic across the desk.
- Pause between sentences. Clear pauses help with punctuation and sentence breaks.
- Use full sentences. Context helps the model pick the right word when two sound alike.
