Most prompts are too short. Not because people are lazy, but because typing is slow. You know the background, the goal, the thing you already tried and the format you want. Then you look at the keyboard and type one line instead.

The AI fills the gaps with guesses. You get a generic answer, you type a correction, it guesses again. Three rounds later you have what one good prompt would have given you.

Speaking fixes this. You talk at roughly 150 words per minute. You type at about 40. When you prompt with your voice, the context you used to skip comes out for free.

The Short Version

Click into the prompt box. Hold a key. Talk for a minute like you are briefing a smart colleague. Release. Read it once, press Enter. A minute of talking is about 150 words. Typing the same thing takes close to 4 minutes.

Why Spoken Prompts Get Better Answers

Context is the whole game. ChatGPT and Claude are only as good as what you tell them. The best prompts say who it is for, what you already know, what you tried, what to avoid and what the answer should look like. That is 150 to 300 words. Few people type that much into a chat box. Almost everyone says that much when they explain a problem out loud.

300 Word Prompt: 2 Minutes Spoken, 7.5 Minutes Typed

Speaking runs at roughly 150 words per minute. Typing averages about 40. Same prompt, same detail, a quarter of the effort. See the full numbers in typing speed vs speaking speed.

You explain like a person, not a search box. Typed prompts drift toward keywords: "marketing email product launch short." Spoken prompts sound like a brief: "I am launching a note taking app next Tuesday, the audience is students, I want a short email that sounds friendly and not salesy." The second one gets a far better first draft.

You stop editing yourself. When you type, you trim as you go, and the trimming cuts the useful detail. When you talk, you just keep going. The AI does not mind a restarted sentence or a stray "so". It cares about the facts you gave it.

How to Prompt With Your Voice on Mac

TAWK is a menu bar app. Hold a key, speak, release, and your words are typed wherever your cursor is. That means one habit works in every AI tool you use. No plugins, no copy and paste.

In the ChatGPT App

Click into the message box. Hold your TAWK key and talk through your request. Release, and the text appears in the box. Read it, fix anything that came out wrong, press Enter. The full walkthrough is on the ChatGPT voice to text page.

In the Claude App

Exactly the same. Claude rewards long, specific prompts, so this is where speaking pays off most. Talk through the whole situation, attach any files the normal way, and send.

In the Browser

chatgpt.com, claude.ai, Gemini, Perplexity, any AI tool with a text box. TAWK types into the browser the same way it types into an app.

In Cursor and Other Code Editors

Open the chat or agent panel, click into it, and describe what you want built or fixed. Coding prompts need the most context of all: the bug, the expected result, the files involved. See voice to text for Cursor for the setup.

ChatGPT and Claude have voice features of their own, but each one lives inside one app. TAWK works the same way everywhere, so the habit you build in ChatGPT carries over to Claude, Cursor, Slack and your email.

How to Structure a Spoken Prompt

You do not need a script. You need a shape. Before you hold the key, think of four parts and say them in order:

  1. Goal. What you want in one sentence. "I need a reply to a client who is unhappy about a late delivery."
  2. Context. Everything the AI cannot know. Who the person is, what happened, what you already tried, what matters most.
  3. Limits. What to avoid. "Do not promise a refund. Keep it under 150 words. No exclamation marks."
  4. Output. What the answer should look like. "Give me two versions, one warm and one more formal."
Example Spoken Prompt

"I want to plan a 3 day trip to Lisbon in March. It is me and my partner, we like food and walking, we do not like museums much and we hate rushing. Budget is mid range. We land Friday at noon and fly out Monday evening. Give me a day by day plan with one dinner recommendation per night and keep each day to three or four things."

That took about 30 seconds to say. Typed, most people would have written "3 day Lisbon itinerary" and spent the next five minutes correcting the answer.

Tips That Make Spoken Prompts Work

Hands Free Mode for Long Context Dumps

Some prompts are not a minute long. Starting a big project with an AI, writing a brief, explaining a messy situation from the start. For those, holding a key gets tiring.

Double tap your TAWK key to start hands free mode. Talk as long as you need. Tap once to stop. It stops by itself after a minute of silence, and a single session can run up to 15 minutes. Dictations over 2 minutes are written in pieces at natural pauses, so nothing gets cut off.

Five minutes of talking is roughly 750 words of context. That is a proper project brief, and it took less time than making a coffee. Paste in your files, add "Before you start, ask me any questions you have," and the AI starts from a far better place.

If a long dictation comes out wrong, you have a safety net. Dictations over a minute are kept on your Mac for 7 days, and "Transcribe again" in the menu rewrites one.

What About Privacy?

Two separate things happen when you voice prompt. First your voice becomes text. With TAWK, that step happens entirely on your Mac. Your voice and your words never leave your Mac. Transcription runs on your Mac with no internet, using OpenAI's Whisper speech model inside the app.

Second, you press Enter and the prompt goes to ChatGPT, Claude or whichever AI you use, the same as if you had typed it. TAWK does not add another company in the middle. The app sends a few anonymous usage counters and an optional daily health check with no audio and no words, and you can turn those off in Settings > Privacy.

Questions People Ask

Can I talk to ChatGPT instead of typing on a Mac?

Yes. With TAWK you click into the ChatGPT message box, hold your key, speak, and release. Your words are typed into the box. Read them, then press Enter. It works the same in the ChatGPT app, the Claude app, the browser, and Cursor.

Why do spoken prompts get better AI answers?

Because you give more context. Speaking runs at roughly 150 words per minute and typing averages about 40, so in the same minute you can explain your goal, your situation, your limits and the format you want. AI tools guess less when you tell them more.

Does TAWK work with Claude and Cursor as well as ChatGPT?

Yes. TAWK types at your cursor in any Mac app with a text box, so it works in ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, VS Code, Gemini or Perplexity in the browser, and anything else. No plugin or integration is needed.

Is voice prompting private?

With TAWK, your voice and your words never leave your Mac. Transcription runs on your Mac with no internet. Once you press Enter, the prompt goes to the AI service you are using, exactly as it would if you had typed it.
