Voice to Text for Claude on Mac
Claude gives better answers when you give it more to work with: the background, the goal, what good looks like. That is a lot to type. TAWK lets you hold one key and say it instead, in the Claude desktop app or in claude.ai in any browser. Your words land in the message box, ready to send. $59 once, no subscription.
Why Voice Works So Well With Claude
The gap between an average Claude answer and a great one is usually the prompt. "Write a launch email" gets you something generic. "Write a launch email for our Mac app, to people who tried the free version last month, warm but short, mention the price is $59 once, and end with one link" gets you something you can send. The second prompt is 40 words. Most people type the first one, because typing the second feels like work.
Speaking runs at roughly 150 words per minute. Typing averages about 40. So the full, detailed brief takes about 15 seconds to say and a full minute to type. With TAWK, the detailed prompt costs you the same effort as the lazy one, and Claude gets what it needs on the first try instead of the third.
TAWK is a small menu bar app, not a browser extension. It types wherever your cursor is, so it works the same in the Claude app for Mac, in claude.ai in Safari or Chrome, and in every other app you switch to afterwards.
How to Use Voice to Text in Claude (5 Steps)
- Install TAWKDownload it for Mac, drag it to Applications, and allow Microphone and Accessibility when asked. The speech model is already inside the app, so it works from the first launch with no internet.
- Click into Claude's message boxIn the Claude desktop app or claude.ai. A new chat, a reply in an existing chat, or the instructions box of a Project all work the same way.
- Hold the key and talk
Right ⌥ OptionHold right Option and speak the way you would brief a smart colleague. Prefer another key? Switch to fn, right Command or right Control from the menu bar.
- ReleaseYour words appear in the box with punctuation added. Read it once, fix a name if you need to, then press Enter. TAWK only types; it never sends anything for you.
- Go hands free for big briefsDouble tap the key to start and tap once to stop. Talk for up to 15 minutes. Dictations over two minutes are written in pieces at natural pauses, so nothing gets cut.

Project instructions
The standing brief for a Claude Project: who you are, who the work is for, the tone, what to avoid. Two minutes spoken, reused in every chat after.
Feedback on drafts
"Paragraph two is too formal, cut the last line, and open with a question." Line by line edits are much faster said than typed.
Thinking out loud
Talk through a messy problem for three minutes. Claude is good at turning a rambling spoken brief into a clear plan.
Artifact requests
Describe the page, chart or small tool you want: what it shows, who uses it, how it should look. Detail is what makes the first version usable.
Follow up questions
The quick "why did you pick that?" or "show me the other option" that keeps a chat moving without breaking your focus.
Research briefs
What you already know, what you need to find out, which sources you trust. A good research brief is long, and voice makes long easy.

Claude runs online, so Claude still needs internet to answer you. The difference is what happens to your voice. With TAWK the audio becomes text on your Mac, and only the words you choose to send ever reach Claude. See how Whisper compares to Apple Dictation for the accuracy side.
Privacy: Your Voice Stays on Your Mac
People tell Claude real things: a draft contract, a hard email to a cofounder, a health question. You decide what text goes to Claude. Your raw audio, with every false start and aside, does not need to go anywhere. TAWK uses OpenAI's Whisper speech model, which ships inside the app.
Your voice and your words never leave your Mac. Transcription runs on your Mac with no internet. TAWK does send a few anonymous usage counters and an optional daily health check, with no audio and no words, and you can turn both off in Settings > Privacy.
Tips for Dictating Prompts to Claude
- Say the goal first. "I need a cold email to a hotel manager" up front, details after. You think more clearly when you start with the point.
- Don't clean up as you go. Claude copes fine with "um, actually, make that Thursday". There is no need to restart a sentence.
- Dictate, then paste. Speak your instruction, then paste the document or data below it with Cmd+V.
- Give feedback out loud. When a draft is close, say exactly what to change. Specific spoken feedback beats "make it better" every time.
- Check the key. If another app on your Mac also listens for a double tap of Option, switch TAWK to fn, right Command or right Control.
- Use Claude in the terminal too? See voice to text for Claude Code. The same approach works in ChatGPT, and there is more on why it saves time in voice typing and productivity.
